Fast bowler Harshit Rana recently expressed his gratitude to Gautam Gambhir after being selected for his first ODI series, set to take place in Sri Lanka. Although he was part of the Indian squad for the initial two T20Is against Zimbabwe earlier this month, Rana didn’t get an opportunity to play. Now, he joins the ODI squad alongside Arshdeep Singh, Khaleel Ahmed, and Mohammed Siraj.
Rana thanked his father, his personal coach, and Gambhir for their roles in his cricketing journey. Under Gambhir’s guidance, Rana delivered a standout performance for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL), taking 19 wickets in 13 matches and helping the team clinch their third title following victories in 2012 and 2014. Rana praised Gambhir for his constant support and belief in his abilities.
The Impact of Mentorship
Reflecting on his growth, Rana credited Gambhir for significantly changing his approach to the game. “If I have to name three people who have been crucial in my journey, it would be my father for his relentless efforts, my personal coach Amit Bhandari (former India and Delhi pacer), and Gauti bhaiyya (Gautam Gambhir),” Rana shared with PTI.
He continued, “Much of my improved perspective on cricket is due to Gauti bhaiyya’s influence in the KKR dressing room. At the top level, while skills are essential, having the mental fortitude to handle pressure is even more critical. Gauti bhaiyya would always reassure me, saying ‘Mere ko tere pe trust hai. Tu match jeetake aayega’ (I trust you, you will win the match).”
Career Milestones
Rana has played only 14 List A matches, during which he has taken 22 wickets with an economy rate of 5.54, including two 4-wicket hauls. His remarkable IPL 2024 season was a key factor in his selection for the national team.
